WILL FMGE BE REPLACED BY NEXT?

April 3, 2025
  • blog

Okay, you're fighting it out in med school, waiting for the days to pass so you can go back home and practice medicine in India. But there's all this looming over your head – FMGE. Except, wait a minute. is that even a thing anymore? You've heard some rumor going around about this new exam NEXT, and now you're totally lost. Am I right?

Let's cut to the chase. It goes something like this: you wish to become a member of a club. You've been desiring some particular VIP pass (FMGE) for years. Suddenly, they talk about changing the terms and requiring some other, even more exclusive pass (NEXT).

So what's the haps? Does the older VIP pass (FMGE) still hold good? Are we all giving out new passes (NEXT)? And how do you go about getting one of these new passes, anyway?

FMGE: The "OG" Exam (But For How Long?)

In essence, FMGE was the exam that all foreign medical graduates had to take in order to become licensed to practice in India. It was a rite of passage, a source of anxiety, and honestly, something no one ever wanted to have to do. But it was what it was.

NEXT: The "Level Up" (Maybe.Someday?)

NEXT is poised to be this brand new, super-standardized test that will do everything. It's going to be one test that will supplant all of licensing, AND entry into those extremely popular postgraduate courses. And yes, it's going to supplant FMGE too.

The idea is to bring all the individuals practicing medicine in India, whether they studied here or abroad, on the same footing. It's also meant to be a fairer method of getting into those PG courses on the basis of actual knowledge and skills, not luck or friends.

That's the Kicker: It's Not Yet Here

Okay, breathe. As of the day I'm writing this (October 26, 2024), FMGE is still the test to dread. NEXT has been teased forever, yet continues to get pushed further and further in the background. It's like that one film everyone was so psyched for, yet still continues to get delayed. You're psyched, but can't help but wonder if it's ever actually going to release.

So for the time being, FMGE is still the gatekeeper.

But What If NEXT Actually Happens?

While FMGE could be the one that's giving you a headache right now, it will do no harm to keep an ear open for what might be heading your way. NEXT could mean:

•  Increased Pressure: With NEXT scores possibly being considered for PG admissions, the cutthroat competition could become even more intense. You'll need to pull your socks up.

•  Focus on Practical Skills: NEXT is designed to test how you can practically implement what you have learned, and not merely memorize information. That means focus on clinical skills and solving problems.

•  Maybe a More Challenging Exam: Some think NEXT will be more challenging than FMGE.

Okay, I'm Officially Freaking Out. What Do I Do?!

Don't freak out! Here's your game plan:

1. Get Informed: Keep an eye on the official website of National Medical Commission (NMC). That is where you will listen to the news officially about FMGE and NEXT.

2. Set a Strong Fundamentum: The most important thing here is really learning medicine and not just memorizing for an exam. Attempt to know ideas and implement them.

3. Practice Makes Perfect: Get used to the pattern of the test and practice mock questions. It will make you more confident and efficient.

4. Find Your Tribe: Participate in a study group or have a mentor who can lead and encourage you.

5. Breathe: Yes, seriously. This is not a sprint; this is a marathon. Take care of your health, and do not stress yourself out.

The Takeaway: Just Be an Awesome Doctor, and the Exams Will Take Care of Themselves

Regardless of whether you're sitting FMGE or the mysterious NEXT, above all else, just be a good doctor. Be an incredible doctor. Be an intelligent doctor. Be a compassionate doctor. If you do that, you'll be prepared for whatever exams life throws your way. Go out there and make the world a better place! And maybe bookmark the NMC website, just in case.???
