What to Pack Before Leaving for Russia?

Alright, you're off to Russia for your MBBS – really cool! But don't get ahead of yourself and start dreaming about your new life yet; let's discuss packing first. This is not your regular beach holiday; Russia presents some special challenges, particularly if you're traveling during the winter months. Let's get this one right!
Clothes – Layers are Your Best Friend:
Russia's climate is a bit uncertain, so layering is your best bet. Onions come to mind!
• Winter Warmer: If you're traveling during winter (and you probably are!), pack lots of warm gear. We're talking thermal thermals (yes), a few sweaters or fleeces, a really good winter coat (the waterproof variety!), scarf, gloves, and hat. Waterproof everything is the best policy. Trust me.
• Footwear Power: Waterproof, heavy-duty boots are imperative in winter. You'll also require a strong pair of walking shoes for non-snow days.
• Versatile Clothing: Pack clothing that can be layered – jeans, trousers, long-sleeved tops, tees. You require clothes that can be mixed and swapped for different temperatures.
• Fancy Stuff (Maybe): If you're anticipating something special for formal events or university functions, bring it. Just don't overdo it.
• Underwear and Socks (Lots!): You'll require lots of underwear and socks for the duration of the trip, and extra warm socks for colder climates.
The Essentials – Don't Leave Home Without Them!
These are non-negotiable:
• Passport and Visa: Keep these, separate from the rest of your documents. Photocopy and store them elsewhere than the original (e.g., a saved copy on your phone or the cloud).
• Flight and Other Important Documents: Print your flight itinerary, accommodation details, any university materials, and any other items that are important. Store digital copies as a fall-back again.
• Medications: Carry enough prescription and over-the-counter medication. Your doctor may need to write a note on your medications, so don't miss that either.
• Plugs and Adapters: Russia uses plugs other than India, so you will need adapters for your devices.
• First-Aid Kit: Band-Aids, antiseptic wipes, painkillers, etc. You never know what might happen.
• Money: Take some Russian rubles for when you arrive. Inform your bank that you're going abroad so you don't have problems with your card.
• Phone and SIM Card: Purchase a local SIM card when you arrive. It's much cheaper than roaming.
Tech Stuff:
• Laptop or Tablet: For classes, naturally. Ensure it's in working condition.
• Power Bank: A lifesaver for charging your phone and other things while on the move.
Other Handy Stuff:
• Toiletries to Travel With: Less storage space and lighter.
• Raincoat or Umbrella: Can come in handy even in winter.
• Basic Kitchen Supplies (Optional): If you're not in an area with kitchen supplies, a kettle, mug, and cutlery are useful.
• Copies of Your Papers: Have copies of your passport, visa, tickets, etc., along with the originals.
• Phrasebook or Translation App: Learning Basic Russian is a great idea, but you can fall back on a phrasebook or app if necessary.
• Respect Local Customs: Learn Russian customs and dress code before you go.
Packing for Russia requires a little more thought than a typical vacation. This is a good starting point, but make it specific to your personal needs, time of year, and your own preferences. Check the weather forecast close to your travel date for the best idea. Pack wisely, stay safe, and enjoy your new adventure!
