Things to Avoid During Travel in Russia.

May 1, 2025
  • blog

Okay, so off to Russia then? Fantastic! It's going to be fantastic, but for real, traveling anywhere in a foreign nation can sometimes be tricky. Russia is no exception. It's huge, the culture's not exactly the same as back home, and you don't want to end up learning the hard way.

Take this as your "What Not to Do" guide for Russia. It's about not doing all the classic travel mistakes so that you can just get on and do the sightseeing, chow down the grub, and drink in the entire Russian ambiance.

1. Drop the "English Only" Mindset:

Yes, you can cope in tourist zones with English, but don't assume all people will understand. Russia is not London! Effort does make a world of difference. Learn a few basic Russian words like "Hello" (Здравствуйте - Zdravstvuyte), "Thank you" (Спасибо - Spasibo), and "Excuse me" (Извините - Izvinite). It will make your life so much simpler and the locals will appreciate it. A translation on your phone is a lifesaver, too.

2. Don't Mess with the Visa Gods:

Geez, the Russian visa is not something to be messed around with. Do it right, and do it way in advance. Don't wait until the last second! Double-check your country's requirements super duper carefully, and double-check everything you submit. A small mistake can result in a giant headache (like getting sent back at the border!).

3. Ignoring the Sheer Size of Russia is a Bad Idea:

Russia is MASSIVE. Comparable, seriously, seriously huge. Don't think too little about travel times. Trains are great over long distances, but reserve ahead, particularly for holidays. Internal flights may save your time (and often money) back, but don't forget to factor in travel between airports. In a city, the metro is your best option, but figure out routes and the ticketing system before you require it. And in taxis, always ask the cost beforehand before getting inside the taxi!

4. ATM Blindness:

Don't think you will have an ATM around every corner. Big cities? Sure, alright, yeah they're kind of everywhere. But small towns and rural ones? Not at all. Pack some cash especially for small expenditures and those locations where they won't take a card. Additionally, let your bank know that you're out traveling so that they won't freeze your card!

5. Traveling Naked Without Travel Insurance:

You absolutely need travel insurance. Seriously. Medical emergencies, lost luggage, cancelled trips. things happen. Make sure your policy covers medical treatment in Russia, evacuation if needed, and loss or theft of your possessions. It's worth the security.

6. Forgetting Your Manners (Russian Style):

Russians have a strange culture. Do some research on local manners and customs. Learn how to greet locals, what is polite at the dinner table, and general social dos and don'ts. Don't be boisterous or obnoxious in public areas – respect goes a long way! A little sensitivity towards culture makes a world of difference!

7. Accommodation Roulette is Risky:

Don't leave finding a place to stay until the eleventh hour, especially if you're traveling during peak season. Book your lodging ahead of time! Consider the location carefully – is it close to the things you're interested in seeing? Is it easy to get around from there?

8. Disrespecting Mother Nature (or Just Not Packing for It):

Russia's climate is no laughing matter. It can be harsh in the winter, and unexpectedly hot in summer. Make sure to check the weather forecast before you leave and dress accordingly. Layers will be your best friend, particularly during winter. And strong, good boots are a necessity.

9. Strolling Around Like a Lost Sheep:

Like everywhere, you just need to use your wits. Watch your back from pickpockets if you are around crowds, especially in major cities. Don't wander the streets at night on your own if you're staying in dodgy areas. Protect your valuables and be street-smart.

10. Winging It Completely

Russia is vast and random. Don't just show up and expect to wing it. Do some research on where you're going. What are the absolute essentials? What's the culture like? Having some notion of your destinations will allow you to get the most out of your trip.

And there you have it. Steer clear of these mistakes and you'll be set for an amazing Russian adventure.

Happy travels!
