SARATOV STATE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY: CAN THIS BE YOUR BREAK IN MEDICINE? (AN HONEST STUDENT'S GUIDE)

So you're interested in being a doctor? Great idea! And you're considering Saratov State Medical University (SSMU) in Russia? Great idea! I know – it's a huge choice, and sorting through all the details can be so frustrating. Let's cut through the hype and get real about SSMU: what it actually is, what to be aware of, and whether maybe, just maybe, it's your way forward.

SSMU is located in Saratov, Russia, and they've had a presence there for over a century – since 1909! It's a state school, so they're committed to medical education and research, and they'd like to get you ready for the world outside. Is that what you're looking for, though?

FIRST THINGS FIRST: THE NMC AND WHO - THE NON-NEGOTIABLES

Okay, would-be doctor, listen! If you plan to go back to India and practice, the NMC (National Medical Commission) is your lifeline. Reports suggest that SSMU is approved by the NMC, so you should be able to appear for the FMGE upon graduation.

BUT (and this is A REALLY BIG but): Don't believe me! Don't believe anyone! Seriously, go look at the official NMC website and see if SSMU is on the list yourself. Legislation changes all the time, and you don't want to risk your career on something that could possibly be old hat. I'm not joking!

SSMU is also recognized by the WHO (World Health Organization), and that's usually a good thing – it indicates that they meet international standards.

WHY SSMU COULD POSSIBLY WORK FOR YOU:

•  They've Got History on Their Side: SSMU's not so much a new school. They've been training physicians for over 100 years! That's gotta count for something.

•  Pick Your Poison (Kind Of): They offer a few different programs, like General Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy. So, you can explore a bit and see what really grabs your interest. The 6-year General Medicine program is a popular one.

•  Get Your Hands Dirty (In a Good Way!): It's not all about books and lectures in medical school. SSMU is more about getting your hands dirty in the clinics and hospitals, doing something!.

•  Learn From the Pros: You'll be learning from experienced doctors and professors who are specialists in their own domain. Having good mentors is HUGE.

• Get Your Geek On (If You Want To): Research enthusiast? SSMU gives you an opportunity to get involved. Maybe you'll discover the next big thing!

•  Budget-Friendly (Relative to Some Alternatives): Okay, medical school isn't free. SSMU is less expensive than a great many schools in the US or Europe.

•  English? Yes, Please!: They do use English as the language of instruction, a godsend for international students. You'll still need to pick up some Russian, though (more on this later).

OKAY, REALITY TIME: STUFF YOU ACTUALLY SHOULD THINK ABOUT

• Russian, Anyone?: You'll still have to learn Russian, even when you're learning English. It's for when you're communicating with patients during clinical rotations, and even just in order to get around. Start now! Seriously, do it!

•  Culture Shock is a Thing: Being overseas is exciting, but it can be intimidating too. Prepare to acclimatize to a new culture, food, and lifestyle. Do your homework in advance. Watch some Russian movies!

•  Winter is Coming (And It's COLD): Saratov does get cold in winter. Dress in layers! Hats and gloves help too! •  Get Under the Hood: Really get into the syllabus, visit the professors, and attempt to reach out to students who have already enrolled. Ask them the hard questions!

WHAT'S IT REALLY LIKE TO LIVE THERE?

I do know that SSMU does have a pretty good number of international students, so you will not be by yourself. There are also clubs and activities to help you meet new individuals and live life beyond studying.

THUS, ARE YOU DREAMING OF ATTENDING SSMU?

SSMU has much to recommend it: a long history, double-check approval by NMC, stress on work experience. But ultimately it's your call if it's the best option for you. Do your homework, follow through on everything (particularly that NMC recognition!), speak with people who have been through it, and be honest with yourself regarding the challenges. If you do your homework, you'll make an excellent choice and position yourself for an excellent medical career. Good luck! I'm cheering for you!
