So, You Wanna Be a Doctor? Here's Why Samara State Med School Could Be Your Secret Weapon

 

Hi, becoming a doctor is no small feat. You want to go somewhere that will teach you the way you want to learn, but then again, you don't want to be in debt for a million dollars of student loans, right? That's why I wanted to tell you about Samara State Medical University (SSMU) in Russia. It might not be the first place that pops up in your mind, but listen.

 

First of all, SSMU is not this new school that popped up yesterday out of nowhere. It's been around for a while, training doctors for years. That means they have experience.

 

So, what are you going to study, then? 

Well, the main program is "General Medicine," and it's a six-year course. It's basically the same as an MBBS, so you'll get a degree that's recognized all over the world.

 

This is the lowdown on those first six years:

 

•  Years 1-3: Geeking Out! You'll be learning hard, memorizing all the science-y stuff – Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, the whole nine yards. It's like memorizing the rules of the game before you actually get to play.

• Years 4-6: Get Your Hands Dirty! Things get heavy now. You will be doing rounds in the hospitals, slogging through different departments and getting to see real patients. You will learn diagnosing sicknesses, healing injuries, and yes, healing people.

 

But lectures and hospitals are not all there's to it. SSMU wants you to enjoy yourself, too (sort of!). They have brand new labs, libraries, and even research rooms. And you'll be staying in Samara, a city with a wonderful history and plenty to see and go places.

 

And lastly, let's talk about the really important stuff: money. 

Med school is ridiculously expensive, but SSMU is way, way less expensive than US or EU schools. We're talking potentially 3,55,000 RUB per year. That's still a pretty penny, but it's a heck of a lot less than you'd otherwise pay. Just make sure you double-check those prices on the SSMU website.

 

Okay, okay, so why wouldn't you want to go to SSMU? It's just not for everybody. You'll be living in Russia, and that is a foreign culture. You'll need to learn some Russian (though classes are held in English). And you'll have to be okay being a little bit out of your comfort zone.

 

But if you're smart, motivated, and willing to take on a challenge, SSMU could be the best option for you. You'll get a great education, learn an awful lot, and save a lot of money.
