Alright, so you're considering Pirogov RNRMU for med school? That's HUGE! I get it, you're stoked, but perhaps also a little dazed. It is a big decision, so let's ditch the hard sell and just speak plainly. What's really great, what's kinda challenging, and is it for you?

 

Pirogov RNRMU is located in Moscow, correct? It's a big city, lots of things to do, and Pirogov RNRMU is highly regarded as a research school. But don't go and start packing your thickest coat just yet, let's go through the pros and cons so you know what you're getting yourself into.

 

FIRST THINGS FIRST: THE TWO THINGS THAT WILL MAKE OR BREAK YOUR CAREER: NMC AND WHO

 

Pay attention, future Dr. You! If in fact you do come back to India and practice, the NMC (National Medical Commission) is in fact the gatekeeper. So it would appear that Pirogov RNRMU is NMC-recognized, which is great, because that means you ought to be permitted to sit for the FMGE upon graduation.

•  Learn Russian, No Really, Learn Russian: Sure, you're learning English, but you really do need to learn Russian. You need to learn it so you can communicate with patients and just get around. Get moving!

•  Culture Shock is a B: It's hard to immigrate to another country. Anticipate things being different, and sometimes frustrating. •  Winter is BRUTAL: Moscow winters are LONG and cold. Pack warm clothes!

 

•  Visa Hassles: Obtaining a visa is a hassle, so expect some bureaucratic red tape.

 

•  Loneliness: The ex-students have indicated that it's hard to befriend the community residents, with nothing much to do but school.

 

OKAY, SO WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

 

Pirogov RNRMU is a great university with a lot to give. But it's also challenging, and it's not for everyone. You need to do your homework, interview current students (friend them on Facebook or whatever!), and be honest with yourself about what you're looking for in a medical school experience. If you're up for the challenge and willing to put in the effort, Pirogov RNRMU could be a good choice. Don't walk in blind, though.
