Going to See Your Kid in Russia (Without Losing Your Sanity!): A Parent's Survival Guide

So your kid's off in Russia studying for a doctorate and you're considering flying over to visit? Brilliant! It's a great way to see how they're doing, get a sense of what their life is like, and give them a hug that's long overdue. But let's be realistic, Russia's not exactly down the road. Here's the lowdown on visiting your child in Russia during their MBBS course, parent to parent:

Why Go at All? (Aside from the Blindingly Obvious "I Miss My Kid!")

Of course, you do miss them, but there are some great reasons to go and visit:

•  See It For Yourself: Video calls are great, but it can't be compared to seeing their dorm room, the university campus, and their favorite cafe for yourself.

•  Lift Their Spirits: Come on, studying abroad isn't easy. Your journey will give them a huge emotional boost and make them realize they're not missing out.

•  Catch Up in Person: It's time to ditch the niceties for some real chat.

•  Discover a Totally Awesome Country: Russia is cool! You can go visit sites, taste awesome (and pretty weird!) food, and live through an entirely different culture.

•  Be a Real-Life Helper: You can help them shop for groceries, organize their apartment, or just be another pair of hands to help get errands done.

Before You Even Think About Packing: The Prep Work

Okay, here's where the good times start rolling… NOT! But, in all seriousness, you genuinely need to sort all this out:

• Visa, Visa, Visa! That is #1. Check what kind of visa you will need (tourist should do), and organize well in advance. Weeks, even months! Fill out all the forms, and expect some paperwork. Look at the Russian embassy website in your country for information. Do not leave it until the last minute!

• Timing Is Everything: Discuss with your child when to visit. Avoid exam week or holidays when they are zanily busy or the dorms are closed. Spring and fall are usually the best weather-wise.

•  Where Will You Sleep? Talk with your child about where you will be sleeping. A hotel is easy, but maybe you can sleep in their dorm (with permission!) or an Airbnb. Book early, if it's a busy period.

•  Flights & Getting Around: Book flights ahead of time to receive the best deals. Discover how to get from the airport to your child's destination and how to navigate around the city. Taxis, buses, the metro – decide what works best for you.

•  Money Matters: Russia uses the Ruble (RUB). Exchange a little money when you get there or before you leave. Credit cards do work at bigger places, but cash is always useful.

•  Communication is Essential: Learn some Russian basics. Have a translation app installed on your phone. Have a local SIM card or make sure your phone package is active in Russia.

Creating Your Trip AWESOME (and Disaster-Proof!)

Here's how you can maximize your visit:

•  Be a Tourist! Explore the city! Visit museums, art galleries, parks – whatever interests you.

•  Eat Like a Local: Try borscht, pelmeni, and blini. Visit local markets and cafes. Be adventurous!

•  Meet the Crew: Get to know your kid's friends. It'll make you understand their life better.

•  Be Respectful of Culture: Be courteous and respectful towards Russian traditions. Dress conservatively when going to religious places.

•  Stay Safe: Take care of yourself and be cautious about theft. Don't walk alone in the evenings in unknown areas.

•  Quality Time is Gold: Spend quality time with your child, even if it's just simply hanging around in their room and talking to them.

•  Bring a Little Bit of Home: Bring some of their favorite snacks, a favorite blanket, or something that will remind them of home.

Important Stuff to Remember:

•  Health First: Go see your doctor before you travel and make sure you're all up to date on your shots. Get travel insurance!

•  Be Culturally Aware: Remember that things are different in Russia. Be open-minded and try not to assume.

• Know the Rules: Educate yourself about local legislation so that you won't have any problems.

Traveling to see your child in Russia is a great adventure. Just prepare, be prepared, and have fun! They will love it more than you think, and you will have the opportunity to see an entirely new part of their life. Enjoy your trip!
