Attending Northern State Medical? Let's Talk About What You Actually Need to Do

So, NSMU is going along great, huh? You're dreaming you're going to be a doctor one day, and that's terrific. But before you get too carried away with daydreaming about lab coats and stethoscopes, let's talk turkey. Traversing halfway across the world to study medicine is no small step, and preparation is key. I'm not talking about the official documents; I'm talking about the equipment you'll actually be handling on a daily basis. Take this for your pre-leaving pep talk, from one potential future student to another.

Okay, let's start with the most important thing: Arkhangelsk is cold.

I'm talking seriously, seriously cold. I'm not kidding here. We're on about winters for much of the year, big dumps of snow, and temps that'll numb your teeth. Forget those cute sweaters you're used to from fall – you'll be requiring a full-size winter coat, the kind where you look as though you're going to climb Everest. Go out and spend some cash on some proper footwear too, water-resistant ones at that, since wet toes don't feel very nice in minus-zero temperatures. And don't forget gloves and a hat to cover your ears! Trust me on this. Also, the days are shorter in winter, so if you do get winter blues, maybe try a light therapy lamp.

Language now.

Yes, your classes will be in English, which is wonderful. But being somewhere where you can't talk to anyone but university people is hard. Take some time to learn some basic Russian before you go. Just knowing to say "hello," "thank you," "where's the bathroom?" and how to order a meal will make a huge impact in your daily life. Download Duolingo or Memrise, or even a beginner's course in Russian. It'll make you more connected and less lonely.

Where you'll be staying is another huge one.

You'll need to dig around to find out what the living situation is like at NSMU. Are there dorms? Will you be forced to find your own apartment? If it's a dorm, prepare to share your space. That means being respectful of your roommates, their schedules, and their stuff. If you're renting an apartment, start looking early and make sure you understand the local rental laws. And don't forget to include things such as location, cost, and utilities.

Money.

Ugh. It's never a pleasant subject, but it's necessary. Establish a realistic budget for your time at NSMU, and don't leave out the costs of things like food, transportation, entertainment, and personal expenses. And always, always, carry some extra padding for unexpected costs, like medical treatment or emergencies. Look up international banking facilities and exchange rates, too.

Speaking of daily life, let's talk about culture. Russia is a wonderful country with so much history and unique traditions. Make the effort to learn the traditions and etiquette, and be open to new things. Eat the food, visit the museums, and talk to the people. You'll get so much more out of your study abroad program if you fully immerse yourself in the culture.

And on the subject of keeping yourself healthy, make sure that you have decent health insurance which will cover you in Russia. Learn how the Russian healthcare system works, and take copies of your insurance documentation with you everywhere you go. It's also a good idea to pack a small first-aid kit, along with any prescription drugs which you take on a regular basis.

Don't ever forget to maintain contact with relatives and buddies at home!

Abroad life could be isolating, so ensure you organize normal video chats, send emails, and keep on social media active. It is important to have someone to fall back on, even if it's across the world.

One of the most helpful pieces of advice I ever got was to photocopy everything: passport, visa, admission letter, insurance documents – all the crucial stuff. Carry one copy with you and leave the other with a trusted person at home. Better safe than sorry.

And finally, when you pack, don't think you need to bring everything. You're going to be lugging that suitcase around, so be practical. Pack the essentials, and remember that you can always buy what you need when you get there.

Most importantly, remember that you will have an adjustment period. You'll probably feel homesick, overwhelmed, or even a little lost at times. That's totally normal! Be gentle with yourself, give yourself time to settle, and seek assistance from your fellow students and the university staff. You're not alone, and it will get better.

And there you have it – my honest advice to anyone thinking of attending Northern State Medical University. It's a fantastic opportunity, but you need to be prepared for the realities of studying and living overseas. Do your research, pack carefully, and take on the challenges, and you can get the best out of it and start your medical career confidently. Let me know if you have any questions, and maybe I'll see you there!
