Mari state university: the good and the bad

If you've always wanted to become a Doctor, but getting a university education in the West has you breaking out in cold sweats, then MSU in Russia is likely at the forefront of your mind. It has its advantages, naturally, but the good, the bad, and the "you'd better know this before you book your ticket" are the following.
FIRST OFF, THE BIG ONE:
It's NMC-approved in India. As an Indian student, this matters to you. You can now go back home, take the FMGE exam, and practice medicine. Without the NMC stamp of approval, you're basically stuck in a hoop-jumping exercise to simply obtain the validity of your qualifications. MSU having it is a big green tick.
And last but not least, the price tag.
Come on, everyone knows that medical school is super expensive. MSU is much cheaper than what you would have to pay in the US, Canada, or even the majority of Europe. All that less debt factor is a blessing to keep you focused on studying to save lives, not worried about paying student loans.
You'll also get a sound medical education. The instructors are qualified, and the curriculum covers all the teachings you will be expected to know – anatomy, physiology, the works. And they’re very much into hands-on training, too, so you will be getting a chance to work on patients and practice skills in hospitals. Much better than sitting around all day reading books.
And living overseas is an experience unto itself. You will encounter everyone from every part of the globe, learn a new culture, and come out of it with a new mindset. That's a skill unto itself which will benefit you greatly with patients.
NOW FOR THE LESS GLAMOROUS SIDE OF THINGS.
You're going to Russia, which means, obviously, Russian. You learn in English, fine, but what about when you want to order food, ask for directions, or even engage in a simple conversation when you don't know a few words? You will struggle, particularly when you are dealing with patients during your clinical rotations. Speaking some Russian is simply not an option.
It's a different culture, too. Things won't be the same as they are at home. Prepare for some different customs, traditions, and the different ways of doing things. It'll probably be a shock at first, but embrace it.
Russian winters are no laughing matter. Yoshkar-Ola FREEZES. Pack the warmest clothes you can, and be ready for snow.
One last thing. You shouldn't expect the same level of hi-tech equipment you would find at a university in the west. MSU is a good school, but it's not the most advanced facility in the world.
IS MSU THE RIGHT FIT FOR YOU?
Take the following:
• Do you feel at ease learning some Russian?
• Could you adapt to a new culture and lifestyle?
• Are you prepared to embrace a different setting for learning?
• Will you practice in India, or somewhere else where MSU's qualification would be recognized?
Do you tolerate the cold well? If you're answering "yes" to most of them, then MSU can be a great option. It's a chance to earn a medical degree for a fraction of the price of a second mortgage, and with NMC recognition to boot, if you're Indian. Do it with your eyes open, be ready for an adventure, and make the most of the experience. Research it, talk to current students when you can, and make the best decision for you. Good luck!
