Basically, you're asking if you'll actually learn anything useful, if the degree will be worth anything, and if you'll survive living in Siberia, right? Let's get into it.

 

The Academics: Will You Actually Learn Anything?

 

KSMU's end goal is to turn you into a doctor. Simple enough, but you want to know if they do it well or not. They aim for a comprehensive education so that you won't be missing key information. What does that actually mean?

 

•  They Cover the Bases: The program covers just about everything you would want it to – from the basics like anatomy to the more complicated stuff like surgery. You're supposed to get a well-rounded education.

• Experienced Teachers (Supposedly): They claim to have experienced professors who know what they're doing. Now every university is going to say that, but it's the same everywhere, some professors are going to be great, and some are going to be.not so great.

• Real-World Experience: This is valuable. They have affiliations with hospitals so you actually get to work with patients and learn from doctors who are actually practicing. That's worth a lot more than reading textbooks.

•  They're Supposed to Have New Things: They still invest in modern technology in an attempt to improve the facilities of the schools. You'll have to check this out for yourself, however.

 

The Money: How Much Will This Really Cost?

 

Medical school is astronomically expensive. No two ways about it. KSMU is less expensive than most alternatives in the US or Western Europe. Tuition is around USD 5,500 per year. Remember, though, to factor in living expenses – rent, food, etc. Krasnoyarsk will be cheaper than large Western cities, but budget anyway.

 

Getting In: What Do They Want?

 

The application. Ugh. They're going to want to see good grades, especially in the sciences. You need to show that you're able to do the work. Beyond that, it's probably worth checking if there's anything special required depending on where you are.

 

The Career: Will This Degree Actually Get Me Anywhere?

 

Okay, this is the BIG question. A KSMU degree can open doors. Graduates have gone on to practice in other nations. But again, DO YOUR RESEARCH. Talk to physicians in your home nation and see if they have heard of the school. Its worth doing this and finding out, or maybe asking others if there are graduates in your home area. Licensing requirements should also be researched, to see what's needed for recognition.

 

A KSMU degree can be a stepping stone, but you must make sure it gets you where you want to go.

Yes, you'd be in Siberia. That's a major factor. It's not so much a school, it's a life experience.

 

•  Culture Shock: Prepare for different culture, different food, different everything.

The Verdict: Is KSMU Right for YOU?

 

KSMU is perhaps a good medical education, a (relatively) low cost, and a very strange cultural experience.

 

It's not for everyone. You need to weigh the pros and cons very carefully and decide what your priorities are. If you're looking for a challenge and an adventure, KSMU can be a good option. But go into it with your eyes wide open and do your homework.
