How to Apply for PG in USA/UK after MBBS in Russia?

April 26, 2025
  • blog

Okay, you did medical school in Russia! Now, you're dreaming big – you want to do your residency (PG) in the USA or the UK. That's awesome! But, come on, it's not exactly a walk in the park.

It *is* definitely possible, however. Plenty of doctors who graduated abroad have done so, and with adequate planning, you can do the same. Let's get to the bottom line on how to turn your transatlantic dreams into reality.

The First Reality Check: You Need a License!

Before you start picturing yourself in an American or British high-end hospital, you need to know the basics. To actually *practice* medicine in the USA or UK, you're going to have to get licensed. And that's done by passing some very tough tests.

•   USA: The USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination): Look at the USMLE as a three-part test that proves you're knowledgeable. Step 1 is all fundamentals (anatomy, physiology, etc.), Step 2 is where you are tested on clinical skills and knowledge (diagnosing patients comes to mind), and Step 3 is sort of like a "can you cut it being a real doc?" test. You'll have Step 3 during your residency. Heads up: Step 2 CS (the one in which you actually worked with simulated patients) is being postponed at the moment but will probably make a comeback soon.

•   UK: The PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) Test: You will take the PLAB in the UK. It is split into two: PLAB 1 is a multiple-choice test, and PLAB 2 is a slightly more practical test where you need to show that you can cope with actual clinical scenarios.

Alright, Got It. Now What? Key Steps for Success

1. Crush Your MBBS: Seriously, your Russian grades do matter. You must have a strong background. Focus on coming out on top of your courses, doing clinical rotations, and maybe even assisting in research. The better your grades, the stronger your application will be.

2.  Think of USMLE/PLAB-Focused Electives: Whenever feasible, try to take a few elective rotations (essentially, extra training) in the USA or UK. This will familiarize you with the health care system and prepare you for the exams. If not feasible, look for electives covering the same concerns that are covered in the USMLE/PLAB.

3. Prepare, Prepare, Prepare (for the Exams!): The USMLE and PLAB are tough. You need to devote serious time and effort to studying. Use question banks (UWorld and Kaplan are popular), textbooks, and maybe even take a review course. Create a study schedule and stick to it.

4.  Get Some Hands-on Experience: Both the USA and the UK would like to have confidence that you've had some real experience handling patients. Even though your MBBS rotations are important, try to get a little extra experience through electives, observerships (shadowing a doctor), or even volunteering within a medical setting.

5. Craft a Killer Application: Residency programs are competitive to obtain. Your application is your chance to shine. Make sure that it highlights your grades, USMLE/PLAB scores, clinical exposure, research, and anything else that sets you ahead of the curve.

6.  Get Awesome Letters of Recommendation: Ask professors and doctors who know you to write you a letter of recommendation. The more vivacious and vivid the letters are, the better. Try to get letters from doctors who work in the US or UK system if possible.

7. Crush the Interview: If you are invited to an interview, congratulations, you've won! You now need to kill. Practice your answers to common interview questions, research the program you are applying for, and be ready to talk about why you want to become a doctor.

8.  Certifications (Get Them!): In the US, you'll need to be certified by the ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates). This involves having your degree authenticated and being in compliance with all the requirements necessary. In the UK, you'll register with the GMC (General Medical Council) after passing the PLAB.

9.  Visas, Visas, Visas: And don't even begin me on the visa requirements! Look them up ahead of time and make sure you have all the documents you need.

How to Make Your Application Really Pop:

•   Do Some Research: If you can, take part in research studies. Being published in a medical journal or giving a talk at a conference will be phenomenal.

•   Volunteer (Show You Care): Volunteering shows that you're committed to helping others.

•   Tell Your Story (in Your Personal Statement): Your personal statement is your chance to show who you are and why you want to study medicine.

Things to Keep in Mind:

•   It's Competitive: Getting a residency in the USA or UK is not easy, especially for foreign graduates. Be prepared to work and face some hurdles.

•   It Can Get Expensive: Exams fees, application fees, travel costs, and so on can add up to be expensive. Start saving early!

And there you have it. It is quite possible to get a PG in the USA or UK after medical study in Russia. It takes commitment, determination, and a great plan, but it is totally worth it if it is your dream. Good luck!
