Hostel Life for MBBS Students in Russia

May 1, 2025
  • blog

Okay, so you're going to Russia for your MBBS, and you'd probably be wondering about hostel life. It's a big part of the experience, and it's not all lectures and textbooks! Let's get real about what it's like.

What Kind of Hostel Are We Talking About?

There are a few types:

•  Uni Hostels: All the unis have hostels. Basic facilities – shared rooms, shared areas, maybe a kitchen. Quality varies enormously uni to uni, so some research if possible.

•  Private Hostels: Some private hostels take students. They can be nicer with more facilities, but will probably cost more.

• Share Apartments: Other students like to share an apartment – you have more control and privacy in your accommodation but have more work in terms of setting up the apartment and paying for it.

The Good Stuff About Hostel Life:

There are a few obvious advantages to hostel life:

•  Location, Location, Location: Uni hostels are usually on or near campus, with no time and effort at all traveling to class.

•  Affordable: Hostels are cheaper than apartment rentals, which is a big respite for students.

•  Making Friends: You'll be meeting hundreds of other students – Indian and from all over the world! It's a great way to build a support group and make friends.

•  Study Partners: With your friends around you, it's easy to study together, share notes, and get help when stuck.

•  Cultural Exchange: You'll meet people with different backgrounds and learn about different cultures.

The Not-So-Good Stuff:

Let's get real, there are some downsides too:

•  Shared Spaces: You'll be sharing bathrooms, kitchens, and common areas. This also means you need to be respectful of your roommates and keep the place clean. Very easily, things can get messy and frustrating if no one helps out. Bathroom.

•  Privacy Issues: Dorms mean fewer privacy rights. You need to be respectful of your roommates' quiet study hour and personal space.

•  Homesickness: Being far from home can be difficult. Try to remain in touch with family and friends back home, and get well acquainted with your hostel roommates.

•  Adapting to a New Culture: There is an adjustment period when settling into a new country and lifestyle. Be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to learn.

•  Rules and Regulations: Uni hostels are not without rules, so take the time to familiarize yourself with them prior to arriving!

Tips for Surviving (and Thriving!):

•  Get Along with Your Roommates: Discuss cleaning schedules, study hours, etc., with your roommates beforehand.

•  Be Clean: Your common areas will be so much more pleasant if everyone pitches in to keep them clean.

•  Make an Effort to Socialize: Introduce yourself to your roommates and the other hostel residents. It could make a huge difference to your overall experience.

•  Follow the Rules: This is required so that you do not land in any sort of trouble.

•  Seek Help Whenever Needed: If you are encountering problems, do not hesitate to call your university or the hostel authorities.

Hostel life is a considerable part of the MBBS life in Russia. It is not entirely bad, and if you are active and prepared, you can make the most of it and have a great support group for your years of study. It is a time to develop, form new relationships, and discover a new culture – accept it!
