FMGE and NEXT are same?

April 3, 2025
  • blog

Okay, let's cut to the chase. You're a foreign medical student outside of India, and all you want to know is: what exam do I need to take in order to practice medicine in India? You hear FMGE and NEXT all the time, and it's like alphabet soup. Are they synonyms? Is one taking the place of the other? What's the story?!

Consider this way: you need to get access to some specific club (practicing as a doctor in India). There was one way to get in for years: by presenting your FMGE membership card. But now it appears that something new, superior, and superior - NEXT membership card - has taken the limelight. Will the new card replace the old one? Or is it a lavish upgrade? Let's decode the pandemonium.

FMGE: The Old Faithful (Still Working, For Now)

Essentially, FMGE was the examination that you must have passed had you pursued a study of medicine from outside of India. It was a barrier along the high way to one's career. It was money to be paid so that one may continue.

NEXT: The Shiny New Substitute (That's Taking Its Sweet Time)

NEXT is supposed to be the final medical exam. It's not just a question of getting licensed; it's about proving that you're good enough to get into those competitive postgrad courses too. And yes, it's supposed to replace FMGE for you guys studying overseas.

The idea is to have one common exam that everyone sits, so that it is more transparent and fair. Sounds great, right?

The Problem? It's Not Here Yet (Seriously!)

This is where things become confusing. NEXT has been "coming soon" for what feels like forever. Think of it like that piece of software that's always getting delayed. You're waiting on it, but you don't know if it will ever actually show up.

So, as of today (October 26, 2024), FMGE is still the exam that you need to prepare for.

But What If NEXT Actually Shows Up?

While FMGE is the here and now, it makes sense to prepare for tomorrow. And if NEXT is someday going to become the rule, this is what it could possibly mean to you:

• Higher Stakes: With NEXT scores possibly being used for admissions in PG, the pressure to perform well may be that much greater.

•  Focus on Practical Skills: NEXT is designed to test you on your ability to apply practically what you have learned, and not to memorize facts.

•  May Be More Difficult: Next would be a more difficult exam, as per some specialists than FMGE.

I'm Stressed Out. What Can I Do?!?!

Relax! This is your survival kit:

1. Be a News Junkie (But Only as Far as the NMC Is Involved): Your bible is the National Medical Commission (NMC) website. Keep checking it for the latest news on FMGE and NEXT.

2. Study Medicine, Not Exam Tips: Proper preparation for any exam is to master the basics. Focus on actually studying medicine, not memorizing for the test.

3. Practice, Practice, Practice (Yes, Really): Get to know the test format and practice with sample questions. This will make you confident and inform you of your weak areas.

4. Find Your Tribe: Make friends with other students, join a study group, or find a mentor who can offer advice and support.

The Big Picture: Concentrate on Being an Awesome Doctor, and Everything Else Will Fall Into Place

Regardless if you're fighting FMGE or the enigmatic NEXT, the most important thing is to just be resolute about becoming a good, empathetic, and well-educated doctor. If you do that, you'll be ready for whatever comes your way. So breathe, keep focused, and don't give up! You're doing great.
