Chai & Culture Shock: Your Chill Guide to MBBS Life in Russia (From One Desi to Another)

Yo, soon-to-be Doctor! So you're off to Russia for your MBBS – that's MEGA! Exciting times ahead, no doubt. But let's be realistic, jumping into a whole new country can also be a little. like jumping into another dimension. I mean, we're talking about culture shock, folks.

Now, don't be afraid of that word! Just think of it as your brain doing a wee bit of Bollywood drama when it's struggling to cope with all the newness. It's perfectly normal, and every desi international student goes through it in some way or another.

I'm here to let you all know everything's fine, and you're going to nail this. Consider this your hip, no-B.S. guide to surviving culture shock in Russia from someone who has been there, done that, and ordered the wrong menu item far too often!

Why Russia Fudges Our Brains

Okay, so let's talk about why exactly we, as Indian students, are pretty susceptible to culture shock in Russia:

•  Language…Duh! Naturally, classes are conducted in English, but navigating the rest of life? Russian is a necessity. Chores become mini-adventures when you can't ask for "extra mirchi" or even figure out how to get on the correct bus.

•  The Food…Oh, the Food! Farewell to your mom's amazing biryani. Get ready for…potatoes. Lots of potatoes. And cabbage. And whatever are those things that taste kind of like beets. It's a taste sensation…just not one we are familiar with!

•  Social Stuff is Different, Yaar: Russians may appear a little reserved initially. They are not as openly expressive as we desis are, and it takes some time to decipher their unspoken social norms, like attempting to solve a JEE paper after a week of fever.

•  BRRR! The Weather! We're accustomed to sunshine, man! Russia? Winter is a way of life. Adjusting to those extreme temperatures can be hard on your body and your soul.

• It's All in the Values, Baby: Things we're used to getting into the habit of taking for granted in India, like personal space (what's that again?), punctuality (elastic time, anyone?), and formality, may be totally different in Russia. It's like you're learning an entirely new set of unspoken rules.

The "OMG What Is Happening to Me?" stages (and How to Chill):

This is the way the culture shock rollercoaster generally goes:

1. "Russiaaaaa! So Cool!" (The Honeymoon): It's new and shiny. You're exploring, taking pictures, and saying, "This is going to be AMAZING!"

2. "I Miss My Maa's Cooking!" (The Frustration): Things start to hit you, yeah. The language aspect is irritating. The food is.different. You're homesick, you're grumpy, and perhaps a little lost as well.

3. "Wait, This Isn't So Bad!" (The Adjustment): You are learning to order food no longer by gesturing and growling but by talking. You have found a shop that stocks spices. You are getting on with people and figuring out the way things are.

4. "Russia? It's My Second Home!" (The Acceptance): You get it. You enjoy the best of Russian culture, and you have mastered rolling with the rest. You feel at home and you know you are good in your new home.

Your Survival Kit: The Desi Student's Guide to Surviving Russia:

•  Become Fluent-ish: At least learn sufficient Russian to get food, find your way, and engage in a simple conversation. YouTube, apps, language exchange buddies – get going!

•  Find Your Desi Crew: Form a connection with fellow Indian students! Swap tips, cook with each other, and watch out for each other. There is safety in numbers.

•  Tourist Mode: On! Don't spend all your time in your dorm! Get out and see Russia. Go to museums, attend concerts, eat new foods. Push yourself out of your comfort zone.

•  Spice It Up: Locate Indian Groceries: Find that Indian restaurant or grocery store. Stock your fridge with spices, lentils, and all the rest that makes you feel like home. Preparing food that is familiar is a great way to overcome homesickness.

•  Move It, Move It!: Exercise is your best friend. Not only will it reduce your stress levels but also brighten up your mood. Take a stroll down the street and jog, become a member of the gym, or even just play some Bollywood music while dancing in your bedroom.

•  Don't Ditch the Home Team: Call your family, video chat with your friends, watch Bollywood films – stay close to your loved ones. They are your support system.

•  Patience, Grasshopper: Adjustment takes time. Don't expect to feel completely comfortable immediately. Be kind to yourself and celebrate each small success.

•  Speak Up: Get Help When You Need It: If you're stressed, don't be afraid to reach out to your university's international student office or a counselor. They're there to help.

•  Embrace the Crazy! Don't forget why you decided to come to study in Russia. It's an amazing opportunity to learn, grow, and acquire something unique. Take the difficulties in your stride, and enjoy the ride!

Culture shock comes with studying overseas. With prep, networking, and taking care of yourself, you can get over this bridge and make your time in Russia truly unforgettable. So pack up your bags, learn some basic Russian phrases, and prepare for the memories you will make throughout a lifetime! You can do it, bro!
