Can I Practice in India After MBBS in Russia?

Alright, so you're off to Russia for your MBBS, then? That's such an experience, and the reduced fees are an added bonus, of course. But then, you must be wondering, "Will I actually be able to come back and practice as a doctor in India after that?"
It's an enormously important question, and the answer is: Yes, you can! But. there are definitely some hoops to jump. You can't just graduate and just start practicing. You have to be smart, think ahead, and know the rules.
The Two Big Bosses You Have to Know:
In order to practice medicine in India after studying your MBBS abroad, you need to be on good terms with two big shots:
• The NMC (National Medical Commission): These are the individuals who make rules on medical education and practice in India. They used to be the MCI (Medical Council of India), but now they are the NMC.
• The NEXT (National Exit Test): It's the test that you'd have to sit for and pass in order to get your practice license in India.
Okay, So What are Rules Exactly? Break it Down:
1. Select an NMC-Approved School (This is a BIG DEAL): This is priority number one! Don't even think about boarding a plane until you've double-checked that the Russian university you're thinking of is listed on the approved universities list on the NMC website. If it's not, then you're essentially wasting time and money. Check the NMC website yourself. Don't believe the university!
2. Meet the Eligibility to Sit for NEXT: Even to sit for the NEXT exam, you'll be required to meet some eligibility criteria. These include holding a valid MBBS degree from an NMC-approved university, having attended at least the number of classes, and undergoing minimum clinical training or internship.
3. Study Hard and Clear the NEXT (It Won't Be Easy): NEXT is designed to test you as a doctor and hence it won't be easy. You'll need to study hard, refer to good study material, and even take coaching classes if needed.
4. Finish Your Internship (Maybe in India): After clearing the NEXT, you might have to undergo an internship in India. The NMC will decide on the details of this, and it can be depending on your MBBS course type.
5. Register with the State Medical Council: After you've completed all of the above, you'll need to register with the state medical council of the state in which you'd like to practice. This is what formally grants you a license to practice as a physician in that state.
It's Not Just About Following the Rules: How to Really Succeed
• Get Good Marks: No secrets here, but we'll say it anyway! The better you perform in your MBBS course, the more prepared you'll be for the NEXT.
• Intern in Indian Clinics: Try to get some working experience in Indian clinics during your breaks. This will familiarize you with the medical system and introduce you to contacts.
• Improve Good Communication Skills: You need to communicate effectively with the patients and other physicians. Practice your English, Hindi, and other commonly spoken languages in the location where you want to work.
• Network, Network, Network: Get to know Indian physicians, visit medical conferences, and establish contacts. This can direct you regarding vacancies and give advice.
• Think About Specialising: A postgraduate certificate (PG) in a specialism can really advance your career.
The Bottom Line: It's a Journey, Not a Destination
Pursuing your MBBS in Russia can be a great opportunity, but it's just the first step. You need to look ahead, work diligently, and be mindful of the rules and regulations. But if you do all that, then you can definitely come back to India and build a successful and rewarding career as a physician. Good luck!
