You Did It! MBBS in Russia – Now What?! Your Super Chill Guide to Building an Amazing Medical Career

 

Yo, you go, congrats to you! You just killed medical school in Russia! I mean, that's BIG. You survived the horrible exams, somehow figured out enough Russian to be able to get a half-decent cup of coffee, and obtained that well-deserved MBBS. So, like…what now then?

 

You're probably feeling a bit of both "YES, I DID IT!" and "OMG, WHAT DO I DO NOW?". That's fair enough. Identifying the next step can be a puzzler.

 

That's where I'll come in! Consider me your career guidance buddy (who also has the sole advantage of going through your MBBS abroad). Let's shed the jargon and unravel getting that Russian medical degree and turning it into an awesome career you will love.

 

1. Operation: Doctor in India (Cracking the NEXT Exam)

 

Okay, so for all of you, the ultimate mission is to practice medicine in India, right? Okay, so let's talk about your mission: taming the National Exit Test, or NEXT.

 

•  NEXT Declassified: Okay, this is not another test. This is THE pass to practicing in India. It's all about making sure that any doctor (whoever trained where) has the skills to provide good care.

•  Study Mode: On! Treat this like your final boss battle. You need a solid plan. That is, making an excellent study plan, acquiring the best textbooks and online materials, and destroying those practice tests. Tip: Those NEXT prep courses? They can be totally worth it in staying on track.

•  Rotations = Real Life: Remember all those clinical rotations you went through? They weren't fantasies! Listen to the patients, learn from those old salts, and drink in all you can. All those real-world skills are going to come in handy!.

•  Internship Time: From Book Smart to Street Smart: After you've passed the NEXT (whoopee!), you'll need to do an internship in India. This is the time when you get to put what you've learned into practice. Seek out hospitals with a high case mix and great mentors.

 

2. Level Up: Becoming a Specialist (Time to Pick Your Superhero Power!)

 

Maybe you're going, "General practice is great, but I need to be best at something totally specialized." Time to move up and specialize!

 

• NEET-PG: Another Challenge Accepted: If you dream to get a seat for postgraduation in India, you're going to need to ace the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses (NEET-PG). Work hard!

•  Find Your Calling: What Does It Take to Get You Up in the Morning? Cardiology? Neurology? Surgery? Pediatrics? Something else? Do some discovery, talk to doctors in different specialties, and discover the specialty which most gets you pumped up to come to work each day.

•  Power Up Your Resume: Postgraduate admission is competitive. Work at bumping those grades up, do some research, do some conference presentations, and get as much experience as possible.

•  World Domination: Postgraduate Studies Worldwide: A death-defying one, isn't it? Do your postgraduate studies abroad. Just make sure your degree is recognized and you meet all the requirements.

 

3. Be a Scientist Inside: Academia and Research Call!

In case you're more interested in research than in bedside manners, then medical research or academia might be your lifetime calling.

 

•  Roll Up Your Sleeves: Seek Out Research Opportunities: Volunteer to be a research assistant or seek out current projects on which to get involved.

•  Go Deep: PhD Time! A PhD is required if you want a research career. Get into a good program with an advisor who's doing work you're passionate about.

•  Share Your Knowledge: Publish and Present Your Work: Get your research out there! Publish and present at conferences.

•  Educate the Next Generation: Inspire Future Docs: Teaching or mentoring is a fantastic way to share your knowledge and it's really rewarding.

 

4. Become Official: Licensing and Registration 101

 

It's time now to ensure you're official!

 

•  MCI/NMC Decoded: Get to know the rules and regulations released by the Medical Council of India (now National Medical Commission). Understand how they authenticate foreign degrees and how to register.

•  State Rules Apply: You will also have to register with the state medical council where you plan to practice.

•  Keep It Current: Make sure your license remains current by doing continuing medical education (CME) and following all of the ethical guidelines.

 

5. Never Stop Learning (Seriously!)

 

Medicine changes daily, so you must be a lifelong student.

 

•  Conferences and Workshops: Go to conferences so you'll be on the cutting edge of what's new.

•  Become a Journal Junkie: Read those med journals! Get up to speed on research and new guidelines.

•  Online Learning: Shape the Future: Learn online to expand your horizons.

 

Listen, your MBBS from Russia is just fantastic, and it's only the beginning. How you go about creating your medical career is different for everyone.
