ARE YOU HOMESICK? SOME TIPS TO STAY POSITIVE WHEN STUDYING ABROAD.

Homesick SOS: Your Real-Life Guide to Staying Positive When You're Miles Away From Home
So, congratulations! You packed your bags, said a tearful goodbye, and set off on the adventure of a lifetime: studying abroad. You're probably imagining yourself making your way through stylish foreign capitals, forming best friends for life, and crushing all your exams. And of course, some of that will definitely happen.
But come on, there will be days when you're staring at a plate of food you've never seen before, missing your family like anything, and wondering if you have made the right decision. That's homesickness getting the better of you, and it is perfectly normal.
The good news? It's manageable. You can learn to ride those waves of homesickness and remain hopeful. Here's my (human) guide to remaining positive when you're far from home:
Acknowledge It, Don't Ignore It:
Step one is to admit you're homesick. Don't try to be a macho guy or pretend like everything is okay. It's okay to miss your family, friends, favorite food, and even your pesky little brother. If you don't deal with it, it'll get worse. Allow yourself to feel the feelings, but don't let them overwhelm you.
Connect, But Don't Dwell
Technology is your friend! Video calling your loved ones and friends can be a lifesaver. Seeing their faces and hearing their voices can immediately make you feel close to them. Just don't overdo it. Being tied up on the phone all day long will only make you miss them more and prevent you from living your new life. Plan regular calls, but make sure that they don't dominate your life.
Find Your Tribe:
It's also important to make new friends to fight homesickness. Find people who like what you like, whether it's through a club, volunteering, or just meeting new people in class. Having friends in your new place will make you feel less isolated and more at home.
Embrace the New:
Another excellent method of conquering homesickness is to surround yourself with your new surroundings. Get to know your city, eat unfamiliar foods, pick up the local language, and visit cultural events. The more active you are around your environment, the more you will feel at home.
Create a Routine:
Having the knowledge of how to organize the day can be centering. Create a daily or weekly routine packed with activities that put you in a good mood, such as running, reading, or pursuing a hobby. This will make you feel forward-looking and more in control.
Take Care of Yourself
When you're depressed, it's easy to ignore your physical and mental health. Make sure that you're eating healthy foods, sleeping properly, and exercising regularly. Allow yourself time to take it easy and relax, perhaps by listening to music, reading a book, or taking a walk in the woods.
Remember Why You're There:
When homesickness hits, it's easy to forget why you decided to study abroad in the first place. Recall your goals, your dreams, and the opportunities ahead of you. Think about the amazing experiences you're gaining and the person you're becoming.
Seek Help When Needed:
If homesickness is all-embracing and impacting your daily life, do not hesitate to seek the help of a counselor or therapist. Universities generally offer counseling services for international students. No need to be embarrassed, and it might just transform a lot of things.
Homesickness is an aspect of studying abroad, but it doesn't have to ruin your experience. By acknowledging it, connecting with others, loving where you are, and caring for yourself well, you can stay positive and make the most of your time away. You've got this!
